Wood is mainly made of cellulose and lignin. Lignin makes plants, especially trees, hard and resistable to pressure. Lignin is so hard that it lasts much longer to compost it than the cellulose part.

In dead wood which is very soft, the lignin parts were eaten up my a certain fungus (white rot).
