Only the alpha pair of a pack reproduces (in general), which ensures that the cubs hold the genetics which helped their parents to become the leaders of a pack.

To become the leader of a pack a wolf must face constantly battles for strength showing from the other pack members. Only the strongest individuals can get high ranks.

Wolf pups beg for food by licking the lips of adult pack members. This causes them to throw up some pieces of their last meal for them. This is also the way young pups are fed in the wild when they are yet to small to join hunting.
